General Surgical Pathology/Gastrointestinal Pathology FellowshipProgram FacultyWilliam B. Laskin, MD - Director of Surgical Pathology and Surgical pathology Fellowship; Soft Tissue/Bone DescriptionThe Department of Pathology at Northwestern University offers a Surgical Pathology fellowship with an emphasis of gastrointestinal pathology yearly. Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the main teaching hospital is located in the magnificent “gold coast” area of downtown Chicago, is one of the largest referral centers in the Midwest for patients with gastrointestinal, liver, pancreatic, urologic, and gynecologic/breast disorders. The pathology department accesses over 41,000 in-house and over 2,000 consultation cases per year. The anatomic pathology staff includes experts in the fields of gastrointestinal/liver/pancreaticobiliary tract, urologic, breast, gynecologic, pulmonary, and soft tissue/bone pathology. The fellowship is designed to provide comprehensive training in diagnostic surgical pathology including standard diagnostic practices, immunohistochemistry, and specialized techniques. As the gastrointestinal, liver, and pancreaticobiliary tract pathology services constitute a major proportion of in-house and referral cases, fellowship training in these areas will be emphasized and translational research opportunities in gastrointestinal and liver pathology are available. Additionally, the fellow may participate in the activities of the Neuropathology and Dermatopathology departments, if desired. The candidate is expected to participate in the diagnosis of surgical pathology specimens, inter-departmental clinical conferences, frozen section analysis, and training of anatomic pathology residents. In addition, ample opportunities exist for scholarly collaborations in all areas of surgical pathology and for teaching 2nd year Feinberg School of Medicine (FSM) medical students. RequirementsCandidates must be board eligible or certified in anatomic pathology. StipendsThe stipend is commensurate with the PGY year of training and by previous training and experience.
