CHAIRMAN'S WELCOME

A department's success ultimately is judged by the quality of the trainees it produces. Our goal is to train the next generation of pathologists who will make important contributions to the field working as scientists and/or diagnosticians. Northwestern is an environment in which teaching medical students, graduate students, residents, and fellows is not only expected, it is valued and rewarded.

Our residency training program is growing in size to allow more flexibility for research and clinical electives. Newly revised AP and CP curricula ensure that our residents have the latest information in all aspects of pathology. Our expanding Physician-Scientist Training Program provides an opportunity for qualified residents to spend two or more years pursuing laboratory research. The individualized mentored program includes residency training in AP and/or CP, full-time research, and fellowship training.

Northwestern now has fellowship programs in general surgical pathology and five subspecialty areas and we are planning fellowships in GI/liver pathology and CP disciplines.

We are confident that with our emphasis on academic excellence, our tradition of outstanding clinical service, and our interactive faculty of dedicated, compassionate, and talented physicians and scientists that Northwestern's Department of Pathology will continue to grow in stature and excellence.

DIRECTOR'S WELCOME

The overall goal of the residency program is to train physicians for the professional practice of pathology. Training is available in anatomic and clinical pathology, anatomic pathology only, or clinical pathology only. The graduate should have sufficient knowledge of investigation to be able to evaluate the literature and to keep up to date in the field. To this end, we emphasize an awareness of academic research and its impact on changes in practice. All residents are encouraged to avail themselves of the numerous opportunities for research if they so choose. Adequate flexibility exists to develop expertise in a chosen subspecialty, an academic research interest, or to focus on clinical laboratory management skills.
